Gritty Textures, River Backdrop + Small Town Urban Vibe: Cody’s Senior Pictures in Golden, CO

Come along with me on Cody's Colorado summer senior photoshoot. Cody is a senior at Arvada West High School.

There’s a reason Golden remains one of my absolute favorite spots for Colorado senior pictures. Where else can you find weathered historic textures, a gorgeous  river with  picturesque bridges, and a vibrant small town vibe all within walking distance?

Cody’s session was a masterclass in versatility. By keeping his favorite pair of jeans as a base and swapping through six different shirts, we were able to create a massive amount of variety in his gallery without spending precious time changing!

The Look: Textures & Tones for Golden Senior Pictures

We kicked things off at the Golden History Park.

• The Summer Polo: This was a great shirt to start in. The light blue looked great with the weathered grey and white building as well as with the natural colors of the landscape.

• The Flannel: Cody’s neutral brown flannel was a perfect match for the rustic wooden buildings and tall autumn grasses. It gave those first few shots a warm, rugged "fall vibe" that feels quintessentially Colorado.

• The Summer Button-Up: Swapping to a printed short-sleeve shirt against the white historic buildings added a bright, clean pop to the gallery.

Pro Tip: I love using the steps of the historic cabins for posing. It adds depth to the composition and gives the senior a natural place to lean and relax.

• The Dressy Flannel: Mid-session Cody changed into a vibrant blue long-sleeve button down flannel that really brought out his eyes.

Capturing Natural Expressions during Senior Photos

To keep the energy high and the smiles genuine, we incorporated movement. Taking "walking shots" is one of my favorite ways to shake off any camera nerves. It allows for those candid, unposed expressions that might not otherwise come out.

Nature vs. Urban in Golden, Colorado

As we moved toward the river, Cody changed into a classic white polo. The simplicity of the white against the rushing water and green trees was stunning—timeless and fresh.

As the sun began to dip, we headed into Downtown Golden. Cody threw on a navy polo, which looked incredible against the warm brickwork of the urban alleyways. It’s amazing how a simple color shift can change the entire "mood" of a photo from outdoorsy to sophisticated.

A Dramatic Finale with Epic Colorado Skies

We ended the night at the bridge on the edge of town, and Mother Nature definitely got the memo. The sky erupted in brilliant pinks and purples.

• The Athlete: We captured some high-intensity lacrosse photos on the bridge, using the dramatic sunset as the backdrop.

• The Gentleman: To wrap it all up, Cody added a suit jacket for some elevated, formal portraits that felt like the perfect "closing chapter" to his high school career.

Cody's Colorado senior photo session in Golden was an absolute blast. He nailed his six outfits and got so much variety in his gallery with all of the spots we stopped at on our walk around town.
