Have you ever seen the Sun transform Red Rock's iconic red sandstone formations into a beautiful mosaic of lights and textures? Early last September, this was the perfect setting for a photo session with Troy, a passionate soccer player whose energy and skill contrasted the landscape magnificently. The combination of the natural terrain and Troy's soccer moves created an amazing opportunity to capture both movement and color.

The Setting: Red Rocks Park at Sunset
Red Rocks Park is one of Colorado's most famous natural structures, known for its looming rock formations and the embedded amphitheater carved into the heart of Morrison. When the Sun hits the park's red sandstones, a new world of unique glows and hues comes to life. The warm light reflecting off the rocks, creates a rich palette of reds, oranges, and golds perfect for photographing Senior students.
Although many might overlook the winding road intertwined throughout the park in favor of the natural rock formations, when taking a step back, the contrast between organic and inorganic shapes creates a new perspective. The double yellow lines creates a distinct graphic element allowing the subject to standout among the red sandstone. Combined with Troy's soccer skills, his dynamic movement added creative motion to the stillness of the landscape.
Bringing Movement to the Frame
One of my goals for this session was to capture Troy's natural movement. Walking photos created exciting opportunities to captures natural movement without forcing poses. As Troy moved along the road, his fluid movements contrasted the rugged environment.
Since Troy is a soccer player, the session naturally included the soccer ball. His electric skills created moments I could not have planned for. From juggling shots on the road to poised stills along the double yellow lines and rock formations resulted in striking images. The ball in motion against the static, monumental rocks showed a contrast between human agility and nature’s permanence.
Using Light to Enhance the Mood
The warm evening glow was a key element throughout the shoot. As the sun lowered, the colors deepened, and shadows grew longer. Allowing me to highlight the scene's unique depth and drama. Towards the end of the session, the natural light was paired with off-camera lighting to enhance our creative direction.
After climbing a short trail, a distant view of the amphitheater combined with the dusk's fading light, created a perfect spot to capture the last photos of the session. Amongst the natural ambiance, Troy's vibrant movements allowed him to stand out against the vast landscape.

Tips for Capturing Outdoor Sports Sessions at Sunset
Scout the location ahead of time to find interesting backgrounds and natural light angles.
Use natural lines like roads or trails to guide the viewer’s eye through the photo.
Incorporate movement by encouraging subjects to walk, run, or interact with props like a soccer ball.
Combine natural and artificial light to add dimension and highlight the subject as daylight fades.
Experiment with different perspectives such as eye-level shots for intimacy or wide angles to show scale.
Final Thoughts on the Session
This session with Troy at Red Rocks showed how a simple idea—combining a sport with a stunning location at sunset—can produce powerful images. The warm light, the striking red rocks, and the energy of a soccer player juggling a ball on the road created a memorable visual story. Using both natural and off-camera light added layers of mood and drama that made the photos stand out.
